Wonder wrote and played nearly every instrument himself, pioneering the use of synthesizers in funk. Originally written for Jeff Beck, Wonder kept it for himself after hearing how well it worked. It became his first #1 in a decade.

Musical Significance

Heralded Wonder's 'Classic Period' (1972–1976), during which he renegotiated his Motown contract for full artistic control — unprecedented for a Black artist. The song's clavinet riff is one of the most imitated in music history.

Historical Context

Recorded in 1972, the same year Wonder turned 21 and renegotiated his contract. Motown was simultaneously relocating from Detroit to Los Angeles, signaling the end of an era.
